Spyware can do much more than simply monitor your internet browsing, as many mistakenly believe. It can redirect your browser, change your preference settings, install additional software and even cause your computer to blindly access a website which contains much more harmful entities for your computer to obtain, such as the most destructive viruses.
What else can spyware do? Well, since spyware monitors your browsing activity, they could also be allowing for those annoying pop ups to appear, your computer could be acting especially sluggish, new favorites may be being added to your favorites folder, compliments of spyware, it can change your home page when you open up your web browser, less than exciting new toolbars install themselves on your PC, strange noises you’ve never heard before are being made by your computer, you may see an increase of emails and they have no sender’s name, you could even be getting charged for 1-900 numbers on your phone bill which you did not make.
The list goes on and on, and obviously, spyware can be quite the negative entity. New spyware emerges daily, and those little pests have learned new tricks. Everyone should know just how dangerous spyware can be.
What to do about it? One major misconception, is that you are already protected against spyware because you have an anti-virus program on your computer. Not all anti-virus programs protect you from spyware. In fact, not many anti-virus programs include that protection in with their software until just recently. This misconception goes further to include those who believe that their firewall will protect them from all spyware.
So many computers are infected by spyware, 9 out of 10, in fact. The reasons are, for one, because many computer owners do not have spyware protection! Secondly, because plenty of spyware can download onto your computer even with protection! Which is mainly because of the misconceptions that you already are protected, and of course, because there are so many new spyware attacks emerging on a regular, fast paced, basis.
Every computer that accesses the internet is at high risk of obtaining spyware without proper protection against it. Proper protection means an updated version of anti-spyware software. Without updated software, you are opening yourself up to thousands of newer and more malicious forms of spyware.
